Makeup Melody

Makeup Melody

Game Design

Overview: Rhythm game made for the Live2D game jam.

Design Goals:

  • Create a game that uses Live2D models/animation
    • Integrate Live2D in a meaningful way
    • A short game that can be played and understood immediately by players

How were they achieved:

  • We were on a tight schedule, so we decided to create a rhythm game, as the general gameplay loop is well tested and familiar to many people.
  • This kind of game also complimented the strengths of our team, allowing us to create the best experience we could in the allotted time.
  • We decided the theme of the game is what would make it stand out, translating the rhythm gameplay mechanics and the added context of frantically applying makeup as you’re running late to going out.
  • As the player completes the level, the makeup of the character is applied in real time based on how well the player completes the level.

Takeaways

  • Juicing up otherwise simple interactions is super beneficial in improving game feel.
  • Often the simplest solutions are the best.
  • Allocate extra time to working with new tech (in this case the Live2D unity plugin) as it often introduces unexpected issues that need to be solved.
  • Game jams are stressful but fun!
