Bent-O-verload
Bent-O-verload
Overview: Spatial management puzzle, like 2048 or tetris, but with physics based food. Created for TOJam2025.
Design goals:
- The theme of this jam was: “The more you have the worse it gets”
- We aimed to create a small contained experience.
How they were achieved:
- Landed on this concept because it:
- It leans into our strengths as developers.
- Is simple to understand for players.
- In scope for the time available.
- Players learn through experimentation, instead of being explicitly told. There is little risk early in the game, so players are able to play around with the mechanics to learn what to do. Players naturally discover new mechanics as they are likely to accidentally stumble across them through play.
- We used common conventions to teach the player as fast as possible.
Takeaways:
- Combining existing ideas is a great way to come up with designs that have a good chance of working.
- Game jam games need to be understood immediately and the mechanics need to be taught intuitively.
- Audio adds a lot to the experience of the game and should not be neglected.
